Why should I not use a sender address in a generic domain

Updated on April 21, 2025

Since its inception, Oxemis has advised its clients against sending campaigns with sender addresses linked to so-called “FreeMail” domains, such as Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail/Outlook. Indeed, more and more anti-spam filters verify that an email sent with a hotmail address (for example) has been routed through the hotmail platform and classify the email as spam if this is not the case.

This is the principle of the DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) policy, which has been around for many years but has been rapidly gaining popularity since the beginning of 2014.

As of 04/22/2014, Yahoo has taken it a step further. Through its DMARC record, Yahoo now instructs to outright reject all emails signed with a sender address ending in @yahoo.* that were not sent by Yahoo’s servers.

Gmail has announced the release of a restrictive DMARC starting in the first quarter of 2024.

All ISPs will also turn to DMARC in the near future, as has already been done for the wanadoo.fr domain since 02/15/2024.

The bottom line: Now more than ever, use sender email addresses associated with your own domain name.

Keep in mind that OxiMailing also offers you the option to reserve your own domain name without any technical intervention on your part. To learn more: How and why reserve a domain name with OxiMailing?
