The typo trap
Updated on April 21, 2025
The principle
It is the latest spamtrap, appeared in 2012. It aims to force senders to practice double opt-in.
Often, email addresses contain common errors, resulting from typos or transcription errors. Who doesn’t have an address like @hotmial.com, @wandoo.fr, @ornage.fr, or @yaho.com in their files? Hence the idea that some organizations had to reserve domains whose spelling is very close to the most well-known domains, and to use them as trap domains.
As questionable as it may be, the typo trap concept exists, so we must live with it and consider that even if your list of 10,000 addresses contains just one typo, it can turn you into a potential spammer!
How to protect yourself?
There is only one solution: double opt-in!
