Why is it advisable to remove generic domain email addresses from your files when prospecting for professionals?

Updated on April 21, 2025

It is important to know that every subscriber with Hotmail, Yahoo, or LaPoste has a “report spam” button in their webmail. It then becomes very tempting for some professionals to click on this button, even when they receive a legitimate advertising email, meaning related to their activity and with an unsubscribe link. With one click, their professional address becomes a “private” address, giving them the right to report a perfectly compliant email as spam according to the legislation in force on B To B emailing.

Legislation on emailing to individuals is indeed very different from that applied to professionals. To learn more about the legislation: What are the rules regarding address files?

In conclusion, to avoid abusive spam complaints, we strongly recommend, only in the context of pure B To B prospecting, removing from your opt-out address files all Hotmail, Outlook, Msn, Live, Yahoo, Aol, LaPoste and other free-to-declare generic domains.

By doing so, you eliminate just under 5% of the addresses in your B To B file, and at the same time get rid of over 95% of the problems!

A simple and quick way to implement this recommendation is to add the following domains to your blacklist:

*@aol.com *@hotmail.com *@hotmail.fr *@live.fr *@msn.com *@outlook.com *@outlook.fr *@yahoo.com *@yahoo.fr *@laposte.net *@laposte.net

Of course, depending on the targeted countries, it may be necessary to neutralize other domains: for example *@live.be for Belgium, *@hotmail.co.uk and *@yahoo.co.uk for the United Kingdom, etc…
